In North America (the U.S. and Canada), utilities follow performance and certification requirements tailored to their regulatory frameworks and infrastructure.
South Africa’s National Standards framework aligns with global trends by establishing rigorous criteria for all meter types. These include meters supplied by municipalities and municipal prepaid (primary) meters, which are only available in some areas. The other option is body corporate- or landlord-owned meters, which are also known as secondary or sub-meters.
All these meters are governed by South African National Standards (SANS) that specify how water meters must be designed, tested, installed, and verified.
