Smart Meter Challenges and Hard Realities in Implementation
Smart meter challenges can make implementation difficult, especially for municipalities in South Africa. Nevertheless, smart meters are often described as a cornerstone of “smart cities” and modern utilities. As stated in an official 2021 government guide, A South African Smart Cities Framework, it has been President Cyril Ramaphosa’s long-time dream to build a South African smart city.
The framework guide states:
“A smart city could be described as a settlement where investments in human and social capital as well as traditional and modern communication infrastructure fuel sustainable economic development, a better quality of life and prudent management of natural resources.”
Around the world, electricity and water providers in “smart cities” are turning to advanced metering to tighten revenue collection, curb losses, and get real-time visibility of how their networks behave. In South Africa, that shift is gathering pace. Municipalities, the country’s state-owned electricity utility, Eskom, private utilities, and sub-metering providers are all exploring smart metering as a way to stabilise finances and run increasingly stressed grids and water systems more efficiently.
