Electricity Meter Regulation & Technical Issues: NERSA’s Role
Electricity meters sit at the heart of the energy supply chain. They determine how consumption is measured, how customers are billed, and how revenue flows to licensed distributors. When meters are inaccurate, improperly installed, or non-compliant with safety standards, the consequences extend beyond billing disputes. They can expose consumers to financial harm, create safety risks, and undermine public trust in the electricity system.
The state-owned public utility, Eskom, provides generation, transmission, and distribution services within South Africa. It also supplies meters and is currently swapping out old prepaid electricity meters for smart meters that allow real-time usage for consumers.
